Le Bontemps – Lunch at Beychevelle region Bordeaux
It was time after all the wine tasting, to have lunch at Beychevelle region Bordeaux. For lunch our guide Frederic ( To know more about his wine-tasting tours, CLICK HERE), was insistent that we stop at Le Bontemps while touring the left bank area. He rated it much better than a lot of famous cafes and lunch spots in the neighbourhood.
Le Bontemps is at 2 Place du General de Gaulle, 33460 Cussac-Fort-Medoc. They are located on the main road and have lots of parking space around.
They have decorated the interiors with old wine barrels as a theme which is pretty neat job. Mind you, the place is open only for lunch and it’s run by a couple. The head chef, who is also the owner (Frederic told us he used to work for a Michelin star restaurant before…Hmmm.), while his wife doubles up as the steward & cashier and does a lot of running around. The place is smallish but with seating outside too but it does get pretty crowded for lunch.
They have a-la-carte which changes depending on the fresh produce, as well as a set menu (soup + main + dessert). This kind of set menu is something we had noticed all over France. We had the set meal and skipped the wine, fully aware of more wine-tasting to come. Also, remember to order your choice of dessert beforehand or be ready for disappointment.
The food was tasty, wholesome and had a hint of asian flavours. When you are in the wine country, value for money may not be on your mind but this place definitely is.
By the way, with food tasting so good we wondered why it was open only for lunch? Who better to ask than our very own dependable Frederic. It seems, the owner/head cook is very popular in the area and gets hired out to cook at chateaux and parties regularly in the evenings.
